I have a 2000 Intruder 1400. Every once in a while it won't go into gear but by bring the rpms up I manage do do so. On my last ride, though, even that didn't work and several times I found my self stuck between gears with no where to go. The shifter just moved freely until it decided to get in gear. If I were to let the clutch out it made a terrible noise which I could go the rest of my life without listening to again. Does anyone have an idea what's wrong or what I should check out first?

Hello Wildfire,

Based on your description of the facts my guess is a gear box problem. I wouldn't ride it at all as things can get worse. Take it to a mechanic before the bill gets too high.

Are you sure your clutch is releasing? With the bike not running, put it into gear, engage the clutch lever, see if the bike moves, if the rear wheel is locked up, then you have a problem with the clutch not releasing, it could only need a simple cable adjustment up at the clutch lever. another suggestion is change the engine oil to the Amsoil 10W40 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, or use the Mobil 1 Motorcycle Oil, you will see a BIG difference how smooth and easy your bike will shift, you could have old oil deposits baked on to the fiber clutch discs thats catching on to the pressure plates, the synthetic oil may clean and disperse the deposits.

I have to say that I think it is a gearbox problem and you should definitely get it checked out, I fear that if you don't bigger problems may arise

It's surely a gearbox problem ,most likely some teeth broke off one of the gears . Take it apart immediately, the broken metal pieces might get in the way of the other gears when riding and that would thrash the gearbox completely

Agreed with mad_bikez, if you're not a gearhead mechanic don't mess with technology

Actually, the gearbox is one of the most user serviceable parts on the bike, i say go for it, take it apart
